Driving Change: HORUS Construction's Fourth Annual Hook and Slice Golf Tournament Tees Up for Cancer Research Golf, construction, and cancer research; a trio that seemingly have no connections. But on March 25, 2024, they all came together at the Tampa Palms Golf and Country Club. HORUS Construction hosted its fourth annual Hook and Slice golf tournament. Pro-golfers, sponsors, and respected members of the community met on the green that Monday afternoon not only to tee up but for a greater purpose. This tournament was special because the proceeds went directly to an extremely influential organization that is helping African American people in an extraordinary way: the George Edgecomb Society at Moffitt Cancer Center.

To Tampa locals, the name George Edgecomb most likely sounds familiar as it is the namesake of the courthouse in the middle of downtown. George Edgecomb was an unstoppable force, being titled the first African American county court judge in the 1970s after being diagnose with leukemia in his early 30s. However, just three years after his appointment to this esteemed position, he passed due to a lack of local treatment options. In his memory, the George Edgecomb Society at the Moffitt Cancer Center was created in 2017. This organization has committed itself to eradicating cancer health disparities in the African American community. On average, African American people face the highest overall rates of cancer as well as having the lowest survival rates. By advocating and educating, the George Edgecomb Society has raised over $665,000 to promote life-saving cancer research and care through the Moffitt Cancer Center.

Prior to professional golfer Danny Yustin being deemed the victor of the tournament, golfers and spectators had the opportunity to hear from some of the people that support the George Edgecomb society like Dr. B. Lee Green, Senior Member, Health Outcomes and Behavior Department. "The funds raised by the Hook and Slice Golf Tournament will make a significant difference, allowing us to conduct innovative research and implement community-based initiatives that promote equitable health outcomes. HORUS Construction is very committed to our cause, and we are very grateful. We look forward to the future when every community can access high-quality research and healthcare."
